&
Ysgol San Sior's Focus on Environmental Learning
Llandudno in Bloom received a 5 Blooms - Silver rating and a special mention for Ysgol San Sior's Focus on Environmental Learning during the 2018 National/International Symposium and Awards Ceremonies in Strathcona County, Alberta.
Llandudno in Bloom participated in the International Challenge (Large) category along with Beaumont AB Canada; Brooks AB Canada; Nieuwpoort Belgium; Rosemère QC Canada and Szentes Csongrad Hungary.
Over the summer, trained volunteer judges travelled to participating communities to evaluate the overall contributions of municipal council and departments; industry; businesses and the private sector – including volunteer efforts – in regards to the following criteria: Tidiness, Environmental Action, Heritage Conservation, Urban Forestry, Landscape and Floral Displays.
Following their evaluation, volunteer judges Gérald Lajeunesse and Mauro Paradisi wrote:
“The San Sior School is unique in Llandudno’s education system, in its methods of educating its students; in fact one would be hard-pressed to find an equivalent in most regions of Europe. This award-winning education centre (primary school) epitomizes the didactic approach to interactive learning. In particular, the students’ exposure to a panoply of environmental interests such as food production, care of the environment and nature, through initiative such as raising and caring for exotic animals and reptiles, growing and sustaining a veggie garden, managing an Apiary along with the production and sales of honey, raising chicken and selling eggs on a constant basis, to name a few. These actions/activities has built a unique connection with nature and earth as well as teamwork and collective support. The students are equally at ease expressing and sharing their knowledge and interests in their school, a school that they all appear to enjoy and relish. It was a joy to visit and experience.”
Within the actual context of climate changes and environmental concerns, communities involved in the program can be proud of their efforts, which provide real and meaningful environmental solutions and benefit all of society.
